A. Volume DNA Cases
For ‘volume’ DNA
cases (e.g. burglaries, unlawful taking, and damage to property) FSI will only
process the following samples
as there is a reasonable expectation of generating a usable DNA
profile. These samples can be ranked as follows
Blood sample(s)/ blood swab(s) taken from scene
Cigarette butt(s) taken from scene
Discarded clothing brought to the scene (e.g. hats,
balaclavas, scarves, gloves)
Implements/items brought to the scene (e.g. crowbar,
drinking vessels/cups)
Based on low expectations of generating useful profiles for
the investigation of crime or uploading to
the National DNA Database FSI will not process the following samples
Touch DNA samples
(e.g. driver’s controls, shop tills, light switches, door
handles, keys, drawer handles, safes, tools and
implements that were not
brought to the scene)
B. Serious crime DNA Cases
For serious case types (e.g. murders, sexual assault cases,
armed robberies) to help aid the ongoing
investigation all samples will be
attempted. This includes touch DNA samples (e.g. driver’s controls,
knives, ligatures, cable
ties, rolls of tape, wires in an explosive device, guns and ammunition).
The extent of the DNA profiling work carried out will be
assessed on a case by case basis through
consultation with the scientist and
the member in charge.
Finally be assured of the ongoing commitment of FSI to
science supporting justice within our limited
resources.
